Key considerations for hiring
- India has the world's largest working-age population and produces over 1.5 million engineering graduates annually
- State-level labour laws create significant compliance variation (e.g., hire/fire flexibility differs between Maharashtra, Karnataka, and UP)
- Long notice periods (60-90 days) in IT are designed to manage knowledge transfer in outsourcing relationships
- The four Labour Codes (2019-2020) will eventually simplify compliance, but state-level notification is proceeding slowly
Business and cultural context: India
Business culture
Hierarchical but increasingly informal in tech. Relationship-building (chai and conversation) precedes business. Decision-making can involve multiple stakeholders. Festivals (Diwali, Pongal, Eid) significantly affect business schedules.

Historical context
India's IT services industry began with Texas Instruments opening a development centre in Bangalore in 1985. The Y2K crisis of 1999 proved Indian engineers could deliver at scale under deadline pressure, catalysing the outsourcing boom. Today, India's IT sector employs over 5 million people directly and generates $250B+ in annual revenue.
